Mojada
Theater Poster Design
Client: CPP Theater Department
Date: March - May 2023
Programs: Photoshop, Illustrator
This was a poster design for the Cal Poly Pomona Theater Department for their Fall 2023 production of Mojada. I was tasked with creating a poster design that reflected the story and the energy of the play to the viewers. I ended up creating many different versions and variations of the poster design, which ended up meeting the head of the theater departments approval.
The design work was seen throughout the campus on printed posters and digital marquees and also online on their website and Instagram page.
Process
The process started out with creating small sketches of what I wanted the poster to be. When I first started to think about what I wanted the design to be, I knew I wanted to use papel picado. I first tried drawing the play title in it, but it seemed like it was a lot going on so I tried to add specific elements that showed the themes of the play. Seeing both designs side-by-side sparked a a new idea of combining the two papel picados. I ended up using the more decretive banner with the themed elements.
Process
When I started to choose colors, I wanted them to be bright colors that you would see with real papel picador. That’s when a lot of reversions started. Having the banner be bright colors, didn't match the atmosphere that the play was going for. But I still wanted there to be some pigmented colors, so I went for some muted colors instead. Because I was using a dark grey photograph, the colors really popped when they were layers onto of each other.
Final Thoughts
I was really excited to begin this project, while it took a lot of trial and error to get to the finished product. A lot of revisions happened to just move little sections and change to different hues. But it was a great experience to have a first real client come and talk to us but their vision of the play, hearing their expectations was great because I was able to capture what they wanted. Overall, I was excited to be able to converse with the client and be able to experience my work being printed and hung up in public
